BEIRUT: The U.N. peace envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi departed Lebanon Friday morning on his way to the Russian capital as part of his efforts to end the conflict in Syria.
Brahimi left Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport at 11 a.m. toward Dubai, a transit stop, before heading to Moscow.
The Algerian is due to hold talks Saturday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on how to end the 21-month-old conflict between the regime of President Bashar Assad and Syrian rebels.
Brahimi’s trip to Russia, a long-time Syria ally, comes after a series of meetings he held in Damascus this week.
