BEIRUT: Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea urged Thursday Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s government to resign, suggesting it be replaced by a Cabinet made of technocrats.
“Nothing supports the presence or the survival of this government,” Geagea told a news conference held at the LF headquarters in Maarab, north Beirut.
"Lebanon is currently experiencing its worst period in six years,” he added.
“Was any progress made [in terms of] electricity? Telecommunications? The economic situation?” Geagea asked.
“Anyone who respects himself inside this government should resign,” he said, suggesting the formation of a Cabinet made of technocrats.
“We are with the formation of a government of technocrats because it is one that worries about the day-to-day affairs of the people.”
The country plunged into a Cabinet crisis Wednesday after Mikati abruptly ended a government session over sharp differences with ministers from Michel Aoun’s Change and Reform bloc over the thorny issue of civil service appointments.
The heated debate that broke out Wednesday prompted President Michel Sleiman to suspend the Cabinet session on the request of Mikati.
Mikati Thursday said he did not intend to resign and said the suspension of Cabinet session would continue until an agreement on appointments was made.
