BEIRUT: Head of the Future parliamentary bloc Fouad Siniora reportedly believes that an electoral law proposed by a committee representing the Orthodox sect will further entrench divisions between the Lebanese.
A report published Thursday by pan-Arab newspaper Al-Hayat said Siniora has criticized the draft election law put forth by the Orthodox Gathering, which advocates that each sect elect its own lawmakers.
“The Orthodox plan pushes the country into a deeper split and won’t achieve the desired goals,” Al-Hayat quoted Sinoira as saying.
He also said the proposal violates the 1989 Taif Accord, which provided the basis for ending the 1975-90 Civil War.
Negotiated under Saudi auspices, the accord calls for equality between Christians and Muslims, as well as the abolition of political sectarianism.
Civil Society groups have also expressed outrage over the draft electoral law, arguing that the plan is backward and will fan the flames of sectarian animosity.
Parliamentary elections are due in 2013.
