BEIRUT: Politicians, friends and supporters of Hariri, headed by Sidon MP Bahia Hariri, gathered Tuesday at Nejmeh Square, Rafik Hariri’s last known stop prior to his assassination, retracing the steps of the slain former prime minister as part of the seventh commemoration of his death.
A delegation from the Progressive Socialist Party headed by Taymour Jumblatt, son of MP Walid Jumblatt, visited Hariri's tomb Tuesday on the anniversary of his assassination. Future Movement Secretary-General Ahmad Hariri along with March 14 MP Marwan Hamadeh also paid a visit and placed wreaths on the tomb.
“We will continue Rafik Hariri's path despite the fact that there are some people trying to keep us out of the country," Ahmad Hariri said after visiting the tomb.
"Not one step has been taken unless it is aimed at reuniting the country and Lebanese, but some parties do not want that to happen,” he added.
On Feb. 14, Hariri was killed in a massive car bomb explosion in Ain el-Mreisseh, Beirut, along with 22 others. His killing was followed by a series of assassinations that targeted a number of officials and journalists.
Hariri’s death prompted mass demonstrations against Syria’s presence in Lebanon, which resulted in the withdrawal of Syrian troops from the country.
In 2007, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon was established to investigate Hariri’s assassination and in June of 2011 it indicted four Hezbollah members of involvement in the 2005 killing.
The STL has been a major bone of contention in the country with the two major coalitions split over its legitimacy and credibility. Hezbollah, leading the March 8 alliance, has denied that any of its members were involved in the assassination and refused to hand over the suspects.
In an interview Monday, the eve of the anniversary of his father’s assassination, former Prime Minister Saad Hariri asked the four accused Hezbollah men to hand themselves in, reassuring them that they would be granted a fair trial. He also asserted that the court would continue its work and that no one could stop it.
“People should know that whoever commits crimes such as the assassination of Rafik Hariri or the martyrs of the ‘Cedar Revolution’ will be punished,” Hariri said from his residence in Paris.
Hariri will speak via television screen in the annual ceremony organized by the Future Movement to commemorate Rafik Hariri’s death.
