Pietton: Lebanon should stay away from Syria unrest
Pietton speaks to The Daily Star Tuesday.
Pietton speaks to The Daily Star Tuesday.

BEIRUT: The French Ambassador to Beirut Denis Pietton said Wednesday that France wants to ensure that the unrest in Syria won’t spill over into Lebanon.

Speaking after his meeting with Kataeb (Phalange) Party leader Amin Gemayel, Pietton said France believed that it was best for Lebanon to stay away from the repercussions of the unrest in Syria.

“Gemayel’s stance of distancing Lebanon from the repercussions of the unrest in Syria is a smart stance. I reiterated to him that France believes that this is the best stance Lebanon should take,” he told reporters at Gemayel’s residence in Sin al-Fil.

“We have also highlighted the need for Lebanon not to take in foreign conflicts into its territories, and that the Lebanese parties put up efforts for dialogue among themselves.”
