NAQOURA, Lebanon: United Nations Chief Ban Ki-moon arrived Saturday in the southern town of Naqoura, the headquarters of the U.N. Interim Forces in Lebanon.
Ban, who arrived on board a helicopter under heavy security, was greeted by the head of UNIFIL, Maj. Gen. Alberto Asarta Cuevas and international peacekeepers saluted him upon his arrival.
As part of his tour of the U.N. base, Ban laid a wreath at a memorial site for fallen troops.
Asarta also briefed Ban on UNIFIL’s operations in the area and ways the international forces coordinate with the Lebanese army on the one the hand and the Israeli army on the other with the aim of ensuring the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, according to a U.N. spokesperson.
The UNIFIL commander also spoke to Ban about security incidents in south Lebano, including rocket attacks from Lebanon into the Jewish State, as well as Israel’s response to one such incident, and attacks on French and Italian peacekeepers.
Assarta also told the U.N. chief that Lebanese authorities were probing the security incidents and explained the different measures UNIFIL was taking to limit future attacks.
Ban is also expected to visit the southern village of Shameh in Sidon where he will meet the head of the UNIFIL contingent based there.
