Rai calls for a neutral Lebanon
Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai.

BEIRUT: Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai said Sunday Lebanon should become a neutral state so that it can play an effective role on the regional and international scenes.

“The Lebanese and the international community should work on declaring Lebanon a neutral country so that it can continue carrying its message [of coexistence] and become an effective element in creating peace in the Middle East, and not a passage or home for unstable elements in the region,” Rai said during his weekly Mass in Bkirki.

“A neutral Lebanon guarantees the protection of coexistence between Christians and Muslim,” he added.

For Lebanon to play an effective role regionally and internationally, Rai said the country has to strengthen its defense strategy and limit arms to legitimate institutions.

The patriarch also asked Lebanon’s leaders to distance themselves from rival alliances in the region and prioritize domestic over foreign interests, urging them to have a more respectful dialogue and decrease political tensions.

Patriarch Rai, man of vision, courage and integrity. Neutral Lebanon is certainly a concept worth pursuing and hopefully religious and political leaders will have the necessary integrity and sense of patriotism to follow up on this concept.
Lebanon has often been described as the Switzerland of the East in reference to its beauty and free trade concepts. Ever since our Phoenician days we have adhered to international concepts, traveling the world and fostering international trade. In our world of international pressures and conflicts, we certainly have a unique role to play. Our diversity enables us to understand and deal with the problems of the area, exist as an independent nation in this divided part of the world, and resist international pressure to take sides. A proclaimed policy of neutrality will enable us to suggest solutions to problems and allow our people to put to use their talents in order to to promote their economic interests and improve the life of our citizens away from vested foreign interests and influence.
