BEIRUT: Hezbollah urged the government Wednesday to address the longstanding issue of endemic electricity shortage in the country and defended Energy Minister Jibran Bassil.

“Lebanese citizens are suffering from a chronic electricity crisis that has dragged on from previous governments,” Hezbollah said in a statement.

Hezbollah, which enjoys a strong presence in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, said the crisis was the responsibility of the government, not the Energy Ministry alone.

“The government must address this crisis,” Hezbollah reiterated.

"Hezbollah believes that the ongoing crisis and the failure to address it causes significant economic and social risks. Thus, the government, collectively, is required to take responsibility and launch a serious initiative aimed at solving this crisis by securing sufficient funding and implementing the proposed plan,” the statement added.
