Hungarian PM says Mideast peace essential

BEIRUT: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban discussed Thursday with his Lebanese counterpart Najib Mikati bilateral relations and developments in the region.

During the meeting held at the Grand Serail and attended by Information Minister Walid Daouk, Orban invited Mikati to visit Hungary and it was agreed that the visit would take place in May, according to a statement released by Mikati’s office.

Orban arrived in Beirut Thursday to attend a one-day conference of the Centrist Democrat International organized by the Kataeb Party, scheduled to open Friday.

Speaking to reporters upon arrival at Rafik Hariri International Airport, Orban said his meetings with Lebanese officials were aimed at exchanging viewpoints on expanding economic cooperation between the two countries. “We aspire to create more economic growth, especially in the commercial field,” he added.

Orban stressed that peace in the Middle East was essential for the European Union’s foreign policies.

Asked for his assessment on the prospects for peace in the Middle East, he said: “This is one of the most important political points, with a great deal of importance, particularly for the peoples of the regional states. It is also equally important for the Europeans. Without peace in the region, there will be many complications in the European states’ foreign policies.”

“Hence, we support all political parties that are working to find a solution that can help accomplish the peace process and make this region again enjoy peace and economic and social security,” Orban said.

“Europe is looking with interest to making this region enjoy peace. Therefore, you can count [in this matter] on European states, including Hungary,” Orban said.
