BEIRUT: Progressive Socialist Party Leader MP Walid Jumblatt called on Syria’s Druze to join the uprising against the Assad regime, a statement from his press office said.

“The Druze population in Syria, who are still undecided about taking part in the Syrian uprising, should settle their choice and join the rebels,” said Jumblatt.

“The Syrian rebels are marking in blood heroic battles against oppression every day,” Jumblatt said. “Their failure to join the rebels is not in line with their heroism during the great Syrian revolt which overthrew the French mandate,” he added.

The PSP leader also condemned Wednesday’s blast that targeted Jarmana district near Damascus, a home to many of Syria's Druze minority as well as Christians.

Jumblatt said the blast which killed at least 34 people aimed at provoking strife in the country.

“Jarmana has been used as a scene of terrorism that seeks to end the Syrian revolt and maintain fear among the people,” he said.

Jumblatt, who offered his condolences over the lives that were lost in Jarmana, warned against getting dragged into the “Syrian regime's trap to create strife.”
