BEIRUT: Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani discussed with Lebanon's Speaker Nabih Berri Sunday the recent Israeli strike in Syria as well as the situation in the region.

According to Berri's office, Larijani phoned Berri to discuss the "the regional situation in general and the Israeli aggression on Syrian in particular."

Foreign officials and Syrian state TV said Wednesday Israel had conducted a rare airstrike on a military target inside Syria but the Syrian army denied reports that the strike hit a weapons convoy on its way to Lebanon.

Although Israel has not officially confirmed or denied the alleged airstrike, Defense Minister Ehud Barak suggested Sunday his country might have been behind the attack.

"I cannot add anything to what you have read in the newspapers about what happened in Syria several days ago,” he said during a conference in Munich, Germany, according to Agence France Presse.

"I keep telling frankly that we said - and that's proof when we said something we mean it- we say that we don't think it should be allowed to bring advanced weapons systems into Lebanon."
