BEIRUT: The government is expected to endorse Wednesday Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s candidate for the top post at the Civil Service Council during a session of the Cabinet, political sources told The Daily Star.

The Cabinet is also expected to discuss a draft law that would authorize the issuing of $1.5 billion in treasury bills to fund development projects.

On the agenda for the session is the appointment of Jamal Munajjed as acting head of the Civil Service Council, for a maximum one-year period.

The sources said the Cabinet will also discuss a draft law to allow the government to issue treasury bills. In a letter addressed to the Cabinet, Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi said his ministry had prepared a draft law to allow the government to issue treasury bills worth $1.5 billion, which could be converted to local or foreign currencies.

The treasury bills, which may be issued in one or more installments, have a maturity period of five years.

Separately, Mikati will travel to Vatican City Saturday evening to participate in Pope Francis’ coronation ceremony, which is scheduled to take place Tuesday. Environment Minister Nazim Khoury is expected to accompany him, while Speaker Nabih Berri is likely to attend the event as well.
