BEIRUT: Cabinet failed to pass Friday extending Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi’s mandate as police chief as well as the controversial issue of the formation of an elections committee to supervise the upcoming polls, leaving the fate of the government uncertain.
Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who left Baabda Palace following the meeting, is expected to make an announcement at 7.30 p.m. at the Grand Serail in the Lebanese capital.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Cabinet session at 4 p.m., Mikati said the proceedings of the day’s meeting would determine his decision on whether to resign or remain as the head of the government.
“My position will be determined in light of the course of the session,” he said.
A senior political source told The Daily Star ahead of the Cabinet session that the government’s future was hanging in the balance over the divisive issue of extending the mandate of Rifi, who is set to retire early next month.
“The resignation of the government is a strong possibility during the meeting today. Prime Minister Najib Mikati insists on the extension of Rifi’s term,” the source said.
