BEIRUT: Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai urged the international community to stop supporting terror in Syria, according to a report published Friday by Syria’s official news agency SANA.
“I call on the international community and I tell countries that support the flames of war in Syria ‘enough,’ stop supporting and financing the killings and arming terrorists and destabilizing a stable country,” Rai said in a dispatch from Brazil published Friday on SANA.
His remarks came during a ceremony organized by the Syrian and Lebanese communities in Brasilia, the Brazilian capital, according to SANA. Rai is on a extended visit to Christian communities in South America.
“I call on each one carrying arms in the face of Syria to stop the bloodshed and to resort to dialogue and sit at the table [to negotiate] a peaceful [solution],” he added.
Rai blamed Middle East turmoil on failure to reach a settlement to the Palestinian conflict and establish a Palestinian state.
“I call on all politicians who claim to have good intentions and seeking a solution to the conflict in our region to work on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the return of Palestinian refugees to their homes,” the Cardinal said.
“It’s only then that the crises will disappear from our region,” Rai stressed.
