BEIRUT: The Future Movement-led March 14 coalition called on Lebanese authorities Wednesday to arrest pro-Assad gunmen for their role in the gunbattles in the northern city of Tripoli.

“The prosecutor general must act immediately to arrest Jabal Mohsen gunmen,” said a statement issued by March 14’s Secretariat General after an extraordinary meeting held in Tripoli.

“They must be disarmed,” the statement added, in reference to fighters loyal to head of the Arab Democratic Party Rifaat Eid who controls Jabal Mohsen.

March 14 also called for the formation of a “crisis cell” to follow up on humanitarian assistance for residents in the embattled region of Tripoli.

At least 30 people were killed and more than 200 wounded in the latest round of gunbattles which broke out on May 19 between the predominantly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and mainly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh.

March 14 criticized the government of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati for “distancing” itself from the Tripoli violence.

“Self-disassociation [policy] from what is happening is a great sin and a crime that must be stopped,” said the statement read by Fares Soueid.
