REYKJAVIK: Iceland's Meteorological Institute said Friday that the Bardarbunga volcano had begun erupting overnight and placed a ban on air traffic around the country's largest volcanic system.
The institute also raised its alert to red, the highest level. A previous ban on air traffic around the volcano was lifted on Aug. 24.
