After one of the most divisive campaigns in modern U.S. history barreled to a close early Wednesday morning, the next president of the world's superpower will have the daunting challenge of uniting a fractured country. At the time The Daily Star went to print in the early hours of Wednesday (Beirut time), the race for the White House between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump was too close to call.Trump cast his ballot alongside his wife Melania in a Manhattan school gymnasium.Even before Tuesday, almost 45 million people had cast ballots for president. They voted at a county fairgrounds in Moscow, Idaho, a strip mall recently swamped by 10-foot floodwaters in Denham Springs, Louisiana, a Buddhist temple in Long Beach, California, and on the run in Colorado, Oregon and elsewhere where special drop boxes accepted ballots from joggers and motorists. Some celebrated their votes, confident of the outcome.Race, gender and class appeared to be ever more reliable predictors of whether Americans cast their ballots for Trump or Clinton.Obama's election eight years ago as the nation's first black president had raised hopes of uniting Americans, but the current contest has only highlighted the country's divisions. For months, polls showed both Clinton and Trump were unpopular, although Trump was more so.
