After three years of waiting for a court decision in the case of former Minister Michel Samaha, the military tribunal decided to release him on bail last week.Samaha's release has legal, security-related and political implications. Why did the tribunal not consider this an act of terror? The Lebanese legal system needs to redefine terrorism and the military tribunal needs to explain why Samaha was not charged.Second, releasing Samaha despite the abundance of proof against him raises legal questions regarding the status of groups such as the Nusra Front and affiliated groups. Why are they considered terrorists and not treated in the same way as was Samaha? Thus, the military tribunal has opened a Pandora's box because it will be accused of behaving unjustly if Assir receives a harsh sentence while Samaha has until now received no more than symbolic punishment.A final comment regarding Samaha.
