The idea of civil society having a key role in the state started during the ancient Greek period.However, the increasingly harsh situation in Syria has created a major shift in the role of civil society.The White Helmets may not have taken this year's peace Nobel, but they have certainly highlighted for the world that Syria is not only about the extremists and the regime, it is about the heroes saving the lives of hundreds every day.Consequently, just being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize is a tribute to the solidarity and determination of Syria's civil society as symbolized by the White Helmets.
