On Oct. 7, 2016, Antonio Guterres was formally nominated by the U.N. Security Council to be the next secretary-general of the United Nations for a five-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2017 .On Dec. 15, 2015, an official letter was submitted to the U.N. General Assembly to present the application of Antonio Guterres to the post of secretary-general.In fact, Guterres seems to have "skin in the game". Unlike the previous nine secretaries-general, his diverse experience gives hope for his ability to make a fundamental change, and thus regain people's trust in the values and work of the United Nations. Now the question arises on his ability and approach toward the challenging matters of our complex world, Palestine and the Middle East in particular and the humanity as a whole.First, how will he deal with the Palestine issue, the utmost unsolved predicament of human history and one of the problems leading to the U.N.'s creation? That's when the game begins for Antonio Guterres to prove to the world whether he will be able to create a "new normal" at the United Nations – or surrender to the forces of the status quo.
