"Innovative Governance, Open Cities" was the sub-theme of the World Cities Day celebrated on Oct. 31 to highlight the important role of urbanization as a source of global development and social inclusion.Planning and managing cities to contribute to global development was a main topic of discussion at this global summit to lay down new terminologies and action plans for the development and management of cities.However, the picture in the region is totally different in the case of destroyed, dysfunctional or unsafe cities.Historical cities in the region have been destroyed and others are being damaged daily.As for Beirut, it is a city which has already passed through many urban phases. Martyr former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri had a vision for the role of Beirut city in driving the country's economy in the region.
