BEIRUT: Lebanon moved into the next stage of World Cup qualifying despite losing 2-0 to Bangladesh Thursday.
After winning 4-0 in the first leg in Beirut Saturday, Lebanon needed only to avoid a five goal defeat in the away leg, which they comfortably did, although the result will come as a disappointment considering how well the Cedars played five days ago.
Two second-half goals from Mithun Chowdhury and Zahid Hasan Emily restored a bit of pride to a beleaguered Bangladesh side.
The home side had only themselves to blame for not progressing after they dominated the first half but failed to turn their possession into goals.
After a goalless first half, Mithun broke the deadlock seven minutes after the break when he latched onto a nice through pass from Shakil, and he fired the rebound into the net after Lebanese goalkeeper Elias Frieje blocked his initial strike.
Emily’s powerful header off Komol’s cross from the right sealed the game for Bangladesh.
