BEIRUT: The January transfer window closed Tuesday night with a number of interesting moves having taken place. The Daily Star rounds up developments at the top clubs in Europe.

ENGLAND

Arsenal added legend Thierry Henry on a loan deal from NY Red Bulls. Henry has already scored one goal but will be more of a figure in the locker room than on the pitch in this stint with the Gunners.

Also added was German Thomas Eisfeld. Eisfeld has struggled with injury in the recent past but was highly recommended by fellow German Per Mertesacker.

Promising youngsters Emmanuel Frimpong and Ryo Miyachi have gone out on loan to Wolverhampton and Bolton respectively.

Chelsea has ended the Gary Cahill saga by signing the defender from Bolton. Highly rated Genk youngster Kevin de Bruyne has also signed but will spend the rest of the season at Genk (on loan) before joining Chelsea full-time in the summer.

Nicolas Anelka has left for China while youngsters Patrick van Aanholt, Gael Kakuta and Josh McEachran have left on loan. Centerhalf Alex has left for Paris St. Germain.

Manchester City has brought in experienced playmaker David Pizzaro on loan from Roma. They have also shipped out Wayne Bridge (on loan) to Sunderland and Nedum Onuoha to Queen’s Park Rangers.

Manchester United have brought back their own legend in Paul Scholes. Scholes will finish the season with United. They’ve let Federico Macheda go on loan to QPR, Darren Gibson has been sold to Everton and Mame Biram Diouf has been sold to Hannover.

Tottenham have brought in Yago Falque (who will immediately go on loan to Southampton) from Juventus and Louis Saha from Everton. They have also let Steven Pienaar (Everton), Sebastian Bassong (Wolverhampton) and Vedran Corluka (Bayer Leverkusen) go out on loan.

QPR were the biggest movers as they added Federico Macheda (Manchester United), Samba Diakite (Nancy) and Taye Taiwo (AC Milan) on loan. They also signed Djibril Cisse from Lazio and Bobby Zamora from Fulham.

Liverpool did not add any names of note to its stable.

SPAIN

The top three sides (Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia) in Spain did not strengthen during the January transfer window, but Barcelona has released Alex Hleb and allowed Maxwell to join PSG.

Atletico Madrid added former Arsenal player Fran Merida from Braga. They have also let Jose Antonio Reyes go to Sevilla.

Espanyol added Coutinho from Inter Milan.

Fourth-place Levante have strengthened by signing three players Abdul-Kader Ghezzal (Cesena), Oscar Serrano (Racing) and Pedro Botelho (Rayo Vallecano).

Nouveau-riche Malaga has signed Espanyol’s Carlos Kameni.

Sevilla have signed Jose Antonio Reyes, allowing the Spaniard to return to his hometown. They’ve also let Martin Caceres go to Juventus.

ITALY

AC Milan have signed Sulley Muntari from Inter Milan and Philipp Prosenik from Chelsea. Maxi Lopez has also joined from Catania. Taye Taiwo has left on loan to QPR.

Fiorentina has signed Amauri from Juventus. Alberto Gilardino has left to join Genoa.

Inter Milan have signed Freddy Guarin from Porto and Angelo Palombo from Sampdoria. Brazilian defender Juan has also signed on from Internacional (Brazil). Midfielder Thiago Motta has left to join PSG. Sulley Muntari has gone to AC Milan and Coutinho is on his way to Espanyol.

Juventus added Ajax’s Ouasim Bouy and Atalanta’s Simone Padoin. Martin Caceres has also joined on loan from Sevilla. They’ve also shipped out Marco Motta to Catania and Ciro Immobile to Genoa as well as Amauri to Fiorentina. Replacing Amauri at Juve is Roma’s Marco Borriello.

Lazio have taken Cesena’s Antonio Candreva on loan. Djibril Cisse has left for English shores, joining QPR.

Roma has added Marquinho from Fluminense. Stefano Okoka has left Roma for Parma.
