DOHA, Qatar: A multicolored tree was selected Friday as the logo for Doha's bid to host the 2020 Olympics.
Bid leaders said the idea of the tree was inspired by the Arabic word for Doha - ad-dawha. They said the logo aims to highlight that Doha is "a city for all to experience, to learn in and a place of nurturing."
Organizers also unveiled a new website and the bid slogan "Inspiring Change."
Qatar, flush with billion of dollars from its oil and gas reserves, is hoping to bring the Olympics to the Middle East for the first time as part of a larger campaign to raise its global profile through sports. The country will host the World Cup in 2022.
"Doha 2020 is about creating a 'win-win' for Qatar, the region and the Olympic movement," said Sheik Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the general secretary of the Qatar Olympic Committee and vice chairman of the bid. "It is an invitation to ... offer Olympic sports new potential for growth, while empowering a new generation of Arab girls and boys through sport."
Doha is competing with Rome, Madrid, Toyko, Istanbul and Baku, Azerbaijan. Bid cities must submit their detailed plans to the International Olympic Committee before next Thursday.
The IOC will select the host city in September 2013.
Doha proposes holding the Olympics in September or October to avoid the summer heat, which can far exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) in July.
Doha also bid for the 2016 Olympics, but failed to make the shortlist of finalists because of IOC concerns over the scheduling.
