BEIRUT: League leaders Nejmeh won their 10th straight game Saturday while second placed Safa could only draw with Racing Beirut Sunday, opening Nejmeh’s lead at the top of the table to four points. In customary fashion, Nejmeh won with ease, dispatching Mabarrah 3-0 in a one-sided affair led by their ever improving captain and centerback Bilal Najjarine, who scored from the penalty spot Saturday.
Building from the back, Nejmeh dominated Mabarrah in an unremarkable match with starlet striker Hassan Mohammad rested after picking up a minor injury midweek.
Najjarine’s penalty, converted in the 25th minute, was the only thing that separated the two sides going into halftime.
Nejmeh piled on the pressure in the second half, looking for the goal that would kill off Mabarrah. With 15 minutes left on the clock, Mohammad Jaffar fired in to put the game beyond doubt. Khalid Hamiyeh then rounded off the scoring with a minute left to play.
While Nejmeh ride high, Mabarrah are entrenched in the relegation zone after picking up two points from the last 30 available.
Also Saturday, 10th place Salam Sour picked up a vital win against a disappointing Shabab Sahel team, coming away with a 3-1 win.
Chadi Ataya put Shabab Sahel ahead after 25 minutes, a lead they would hold onto for the rest of the half. Salam Sour came out of the halftime break a different team as they equalized through Hassan Nasser 10 minutes after the restart. Five minutes later Khodor Najed gave Salam Sour an unexpected lead before Mohammad Abou Atik rubber-stamped the win 12 minutes from time.
Despite only winning one game in their last 10, Shabab Sahel remain comfortably in mid-table in sixth place, five points behind Akhaa Aley, while Salam Sour’s win opened up daylight between themselves and Mabarrah.
Sunday’s headline game between Ansar and Sporting Tripoli was postponed while Safa and Racing played out a drab 0-0 draw.
Akhaa Aley picked up their first win in five games, beating league whipping boys Ahli Sidon 3-1 Sunday.
Bottom of the table and with the worst defensive record in the league, Ahli Sidon took a shock 1-0 lead after 22 minutes through Moustafa Chahin. Mohammad Rammal brought Akhaa Aley level six minutes before halftime before Rabih al-Hasri gave the visitors the lead after 62 minutes.
Mohammad Hammoud made sure of the three points six minutes later to give Akhaa Aley their first league victory of 2012.
