BEIRUT: A strong, powerful and well organized team from UNIFIL's Irish battalion showed the Beirut select team how to play simple and classic rugby Sunday running out 72-7 winners. Although Beirut were missing a number of key players, they never gave up in a match dominated by a powerful & mobile Irish pack combined with a strong running back line.
It took the Irish 10 minutes to impose themselves, something they managed with a converted try. A second try was scored before half time. Beirut’s persistence brought them a converted try .
It then took the Irish five minutes from the restart to get a try from the backs passing down all the way to winger to score an unconverted try.
With the score 19-7 to the Irish at half time, the Irish resumed their domination of the game and scored two more converted tries within the next 20mintues. Before the end of the match ,Beirut, who were not fielding their strongest team, begun to lose a number of their senior and experienced players through injuries from the Irish onslaught, resulting in five inexperienced replacements. The Irish took advantage by scoring further tries.
Although, the match finished 72 – 7, it did not give a fair view of Beirut’s performance ,who on 5 occasions, nearly scored but due to last minute mistakes and strong Irish defense, resulted in the Irish turning the play and scoring.
