BEIRUT: Shabab al-Fawar, a female Lebanese table tennis team, were awarded silver in the 23rd Arab Clubs Championship in Amman, Jordan Friday.

The team, who hail from Zghorta, lost 3-0 in the finals to 12 time Arab Club Champions al-Ahli from Egypt.

On their way to the final, al-Fawar knocked out al-Orthodoxi from Jordan, Bashmarka from Iraq, al-Fatat from Kuwait and al-Mohafaza from Syria, all by the score of 3-0.

The semifinals saw al-Fawar face a tough match against Qatar’s al-Mara’a, who boasted a professional Chinese player in their ranks. The Lebanese side prevailed 3-2 to set up a final match against al-Ahli.

Lara Kodjabachian (ranked #2 in Lebanon), Tivine Moumjoghlian (#3), Anna Marcarian (#12 tied) and Reem Shoubri were al-Fawar’s representatives in the tournament.

Shoubri was blocked by the Egyptian federation from playing the final due to her Egyptian nationality.

Another Lebanese women’s team, Nadi Adab wal Riyada, from Kfarshima, finished in fifth place.

In the men’s side of the competition a total of 19 teams participated. Riyadi Beirut finished fifth place and al-Janoub, from Toul, won seventh place. Saudi Arabia’s al-Ittihad was crowned champions.
