Animal rights groups urged restraint over the weekend following the issue of a fatwa authorizing the killing of stray dogs by a prominent Shiite cleric. Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah issued a statement on Thursday containing the edict in response to a letter sent by residents of the southern village of Nabatieh.
