Today is Liberation Day in Lebanon, but one could be forgiven for forgetting both the event in 2000 it is supposed to commemorate and the air of optimism that surrounded it. The Israeli military had withdrawn from most of the South after an occupation that had persisted in one form or another since 1978. This Article is only available in The Daily Star on-line archive.
