BEIRUT: The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) asked on Sunday that the term “the area surrounding the camp” be used to refer to the area around the northern Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared. The camp was reduced to rubble following 106 days of battles between the Lebanese Army and the Al-Qaeda inspired Fatah al-Islam Palestinian militant group in 2007. The LAF issued a statement in which it asked the media and “all those concerned” to refer to the area around the camp of Nahr al-Bared as “the area surrounding the camp” rather than “the new camp” to avoid any confusion. It added that the term “the new camp” had been used to talk about the area despite the fact that the region was never part of the camp. The statement was referring to the commercial region next to the camp in the direction of Al-Abdeh and Mohammarah. – The Daily Star
