Syria formally invited the head of the United Nations investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Premier Rafik Hariri to Damascus in a bid to defuse accusations that it is not cooperating with the probe. Syria's ambassador to the UN, Faisal Moqdad, said German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, who heads the UN team.
