BEIRUT: The 5th Saudi-Lebanese Forum was concluded on Wednesday with comments by President Michel Sleiman, who said that the current cabinet crisis was an administrative rather than political one. “The obstacles facing the cabinet formation did not have any negative impact on the economic and cultural activities in the country,” he said.
“The economic and financial situation prevailing in the country proved Lebanon’s ability during global financial crises and difficulties,” he said, adding that this was reflected by the increased number of tourists to Lebanon this year and its the investment activities.
Sleiman underlined the importance of adopting measures aimed at regulating the work of institutions. “We have to work on reinforcing the trust in our institutions which is very important in building our economy,” he said.
The two-day forum included sessions discussing investment opportunities and cooperation in the banking sector as well as in other financial fields such as real estate and tourism between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.
The sessions also discussed the possibility of cooperation between banks in the two countries for providing enough liquidity needed in investments in addition to satisfying the financial needs of huge companies.
The role of the banks in funding the private sector was also a subject of debate during the sessions held. “The banking sector has always been supportive to the various sectors of the Lebanese economy,” said secretary general of the Association of Banks in Lebanon, Makram Sader, in one of the sessions. – The Daily Star
