BEIRUT: It was announced on Sunday that the elections of the board of directors of the chamber of commerce, industry and agriculture in Beirut and Mount Lebanon is rescheduled to December 6, 2009. The announcement took place two hours after the launching of the electoral process. The elections are going to take place at the Beirut International Exhibition and Leisure center (BIEL).

Ghazi Kraytem, president of the chamber, said that the elections were postponed due to the lack of quorum. “The latest statistics in the chamber shows that the number of members who paid their membership fees reached 11,301 but the attendance is very small,” he said.

“The elections will be postponed and is going to take place at BIEL because the chamber’s location is too small to absorb the huge number of people who are expected to participate in the process,” he added.

Kraytem said that there was a complete list of 16 members in addition to another five members, and that he is hoping for the election of a new board which is able to complete the achievements of the current board.

The vice president of the chamber Mohammad Lamaa who is also nominated for the new board announced the withdrawal of the nominee Mahmoud Matar. “There are only four nominees left from outside the ‘Our economy, Our Guarantee’ list and I hope that they withdraw during the coming days for us to guarantee an unopposed victory of the list,” he said. – The Daily Star
