Youssef Chahine, the eminence grise of Egyptian cinema and one of the best-known Arab film directors, died Sunday in Cairo. Over nearly five decades of film production, the 82-year-old filmmaker's output ranged from Fellini-like flights of fancy to politically inflected dramas addressing social ills and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.
