Iraqi authorities decided Tuesday to close the country's land borders for three days around the Jan. 30 poll to help curb violence, while Prime Minister Iyad Allawi staked his party's election hopes on his reputation for tough security policies. A statement from Iraq's election commission said land borders would be closed and strict restrictions declared on all vehicle traffic.
