Russian President Vladimir Putin, on a historic visit to the Middle East, sought to ease Israeli fears over Moscow's planned sale of weapons to Syria and its support for Iranian atomic activities. Meanwhile, Russia backed away from the idea of holding a Middle East peace conference after the suggestion was rejected by Israel and the United States.
