Danger stalks women running for office in Afghanistan
Fifty female candidates have withdrawn from September elections citing security concerns

The threat came by telephone: "You have nominated yourself as a candidate. Your life is in danger, and this time your life is in our hands," said a male voice. Soraya Parlika was unruffled. As a leading women's rights campaigner who heads the Afghanistan Women's Union, she said, "This kind of thing happens to me all the time."
