Egypt urged Israel to respond to commitments from Palestinian groups and stop shelling Gaza, while Mahmoud Abbas prepared for talks with President George W. Bush to prevent a further escalation of the conflict. Widening its offensive, Israel shut down charities with ties to Hamas across the West Bank and fired artillery into Gaza for the first time.
