One year on, Algiers and the surrounding regions ravaged by last May's killer earthquake still bear the painful scars of a catastrophe that claimed some 2,300 lives and sharpened the trauma of a country trying to recover from a decade of bloody disarray. Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has estimated the damage from the devastating tremor at $5 billion dollars, spread throughout some 50 of the country's 1,400 localities.
