At least 17 people were abducted and shot to death in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Sunday, hours after US and Iraqi government forces claimed a battlefield victory with the death of 17 insurgents. The violence came a day after US President George W. Bush promised Iraq's prime minister more military aid in a bid to soothe recent friction.
