Once the primary caravan route between East and West, the "Silk Road" is now but a footnote of history. But if recent meetings between Syrian and Chinese businesspeople in Beijing are any indication, ancient trade ties could soon be resurrected, spurred on by tougher US sanctions against Syria and built on a common penchant for trade and negotiating.
