With its interlocking vignettes and intertwining characters, Alaa al-Aswany's hip and racy novel "The Yacoubian Building" creates a complex narrative of contemporary Egyptian life. Aswany's plot is spiked with sex and his language breaks taboos about politics and religion. Controversial, yes. And remarkably, the book is a huge success, too.
