In any other country than Lebanon, the killing of five demonstrators by the army would have led either to a further escalation of protests against the government, including a demand for its immediate resignation, or to a government crackdown against its opponents. Neither happened following the clashes that occurred last Thursday in Beirut's southern suburbs between soldiers and demonstrators. Lebanon is a place where what you see is not always what you get.
