The recent speech in which Pope Benedict XVI quoted a 13th-century Christian emperor's defamatory remarks about Islam could not have come at a more difficult time. bIt came only a few days after the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks, a month after the end of the Israel-Lebanon war.
