During the oil crisis that followed the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, Japan's government spokesman Susumu Nikaido announced in the clearest way possible Japan's firm commitment to UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 and acknowledged the Palestinians' political rights. The event was reported as reflecting Japan's heavy dependence on Middle East oil.
