Unity is overrated.
Daily Star editorials periodically call for "unity". Lebanese unity. Arab unity. Most recently, Palestinian unity.
Why not celebrate "diversity" instead?
The problem is not that Hamas and Fatah cannot agree on a common agenda. It is that when they do not agree they resort to violence and attempt to impose their beliefs upon each other instead of finding civil and productive ways to resolve their disputes.
What is needed is an atmosphere of tolerance, where inevitable differences of opinion are welcomed and valued for their contribution to a spirited, but measured debate -- because when many diverse ideas are forced to compete unaided by bullets, good ideas emerge.
True patriots do not chase after unity. They protect dissent.

Re: Unity is overrated.
Well i think you are brilliant in your statement.
If we look at the animal kingdom and nature for both relatedness and beauty, the diversity of the ecosystems is necessary to beauty and survival. now if we subscribe to darwinism to explain the efficency and efeffectiveness of evolution physically, it does not mean that we need to subscribe to social darwinism.
Quite the contrary, human beings are capable of their highest development only through the antithesis to social darwinism, which is making sure that we as social beings achieve not just tolerance but harmony and replace combat with cooperation, war with peace, hate with understanding and tolerance, apathy with love and compassion.
Diversity of life experience, views and cultures makes this all an adventure.
That dynamic transcendence beyond words or creeds which we call in English God has created us as creatures of process whose struggle to that which is good will always be supported and guided...it is our responsibility to be truthful irrespective of what oppressions and suppression others may use to force us to accept what they claim are God's or Government's views.
From a plethora of ideas and witnesses, a multi-tude of experience, insight, voices and approaches, mistakes and false starts, experiments and messiness, when we can make the world safe for the processes of learning, and give the world our best, we can make living on earth reflective of God's goodness and nurturing of each precious and unique human being, all of whom are our kindred.
All are born believers, when will we treasure each and forgive the mistakes of the past building a unity that is not a conformity but rather a One-ness of all in God rather than a division of humankind by Shaitan's sick and brutal, degrading and destructive tricks in which violence, oppression, jealousy, fatalism, and murder of innocence and dignity are manifest.
Peace and Blessings

aminahyaquin,
You are kind. As an agnostic, I might state some of the ideas you expressed somewhat differently. I suspect that these differences in emphasis would not impede us in a discussion of liberty... but enrich it.
