The Daily Star is pleased to provide a forum for debate on a range of subjects, from local cultural activities to international politics.
Dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of letters fall into the editor's mailbox daily. In order to keep the letters timely, The Daily Star generally produces a special letters section. When the influx of letters is particularly large, extra space is made available accordingly.
If you would like to submit a letter for publication, please remember to include your full name (first and last) and address, including city. The Daily Star only publishes letters under 400 words, and these are subject to editing. The Daily Star will not acknowledge unsolicited submissions.

If an army of people ,deliberately invaded your home, destroyed your property, and brought harm to your family, because of a lie, you would hate them too!

Lebanese cabinet tussle may come down to finance, foreign affairs

The only way to expedite the formation of a new government is to offer all those seeking ministerial positions a salary of $15,000 a year. I bet you the only ones who would accept the posts would be the honest and sincere individuals ready to serve the country and the people. I was told that a minister makes millions of dollars from all sorts of sources - benefits, good pension plan and a way for his/her sons/daughters to be exposed to the greed.
For those to be given the position of a minister of state, I would suggest that they be given instead shoeshine boxes plus a registered corner in Downtown Beirut so they learn how hard is to earn the living.
For God's sake, let them stop bickering and begging. Enough is enough, the people need bread on the table not speeches and photos.

"A Turkey spurned may
strike out on its own course"
June 10, 2008
"The US and the EU are evidently convinced that Turkey has nowhere else to go. The Turks, they think, will fatalistically accept any snub:" Yes, just like after the armistice of World Wwar I in 1918, they thought the Turks would just roll over belly-up while England, France, Italy, Greece and the Armenian Legion invaded Anatolia and split Turkish lands among themselves as spoils of war.
Didn't turn out that way, now, did it? The EU and the US have a long, long history of underestimating and not understanding us Turks.
That's OK, we're here to remind you.

Kudos to Google News for including this article: We Americans benefit greatly from perspectives we don't receive due to media bias and administrative disinformation.
If the Middle-East wants to get America in a positive win-win relationship it is essential that the people, media and ultimately governments extend the opportunities to Barack Obama. Yes, far in advance of his election.
The average American voter is uncertain of Obama's open diplomacy approach and doubts our ability to draw down troops without chaos. John McCain and the Republicans have vowed to "stay the course," which is the protectorate approach. That approach is dismal, but since it's all we "know," it has some certainty.
If American voters were certain of a positive outcome in Iraq that is supported in principle by all the "reasonable" Middle East states and Obama were to be able to place that opportunity to the American people in a clear referendum on the first Tuesday in November as a "sealed deal" pending voter approval ... there would be a win-win for everyone in the area and in the US.
It's really up to you in the Middle East: Obama can't presume but you can request and he can respond - and we Americans will approve with great joy.

"The Middle East and the US election"
June 7, 2008
I am a regular reader of your column, and even if I don't agree with you all the time, I very much admire your well-balanced views and opinions.
What made me write this time is something that caught my attention in theis piece, where you write, "Consequently, Arabs, Muslims and Iranians in the region have not remained docile in the face of this new reality." I was truly surprised that you would use "Muslims" in a way that suggests that Muslims are a race. Islam is a religion, as you well know, followed by millions from all sorts or races.
I'm sure this was an oversight since you are, in my view, a well-informed and highly educated analyst, but it is misleading to Westerners; in fact, it will only fortify their stereotypes and misconceptions of who and what we are.

"How will Britain respond to being slapped in the face by Israel?"
June 6,2008
Thank you Sir, may I have another slap in the face? There is no one there that would dare say anything to Israel about any of its criminal behavior, as evidenced by sixty (60) years of silence. Personally, I think they deserve it for Balfour.
