Discussions ahead of Sidon poll may end in compromise

Intense discussions were going on yesterday to form a compromise list for Sidon’s local elections as the Hariri-nominated leader of the awaited consensus list began his campaign.

Adnan Zibawi, who has reportedly gained the approval of the city’s leading political forces, held several meetings with residents of the Taamir Ain al-Hilweh area and is due to announce his manifesto today.

However, there is not expected to be any announcement of the rest of a three-way consensus list representing prime minister Rafik Hariri, the Bizri family and al-Jamaa al-Islamiyah until next week, sources said.

Meetings are expected to continue this weekend with Sidon MP Bahiya Hariri, who has been involved in the visit of French president Jacques Chirac, rejoining negotiations following his departure tomorrow.

Sidon MP Mustafa Saad is more in favour of a consensus list than his brother Ousama, head of the Popular Nasserite Organisation (PNO).
