Municipalities receive aid for fire recovery

BEIRUT: Caretaker Minister of Environment Mohammad Rahhal handed over a first payment of LL1.1 billion to 43 municipalities to combat damage from fires last year.

“The checks received by the municipalities today constitute 60 percent of the total amount, while the remaining amount will be handed over following reforestation,” Rahhal said.

Receiving the funds were the municipalities of Furn al-Shubbak, Hazmieh, Qartaba, Sarafand, Laqlouq and others situated across the Bekaa.

Rahhal said cooperation between the ministry and local authorities “will prove vital to spreading greenery in the place of ashes.”

Also Friday, forestation efforts were in full swing in south Lebanon, as the ministry and the organization Lebanon Green Again oversaw an aerial and ground forestation effort Friday with the municipalities of Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Kfar Rumman.

Army helicopters sprayed some 450 kg of carob, pine, and oak seeds over 1,000 acres of land, while volunteers on the ground planted trees in the area.

The initiative is part of the National Campaign to Increase Lebanon’s Green Cover, launched and sponsored by President Michel Sleiman.

Separately, Rahhal issued a circular to clamp down on issuing permits for new stone and sand quarries that do not satisfy environmental criteria, An-Nahar reported.
