Store robbed of LL1 mln, 5-day-old baby abandoned

BEIRUT: The 75-year-old owner of a grocery store in the southern coastal city of Sidon was assaulted over the weekend by thieves who made off with over LL1 million.

According to the store’s owner, Abdel-Latif Abbas, a man and a female domestic worker entered his store in the Sidon neighborhood of Fawakhir at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Abbas was caught off guard when the man pulled out at gun and demanded that the store owner hand over his money. As Abbas started to yell for help, the man struck him on the head with his gun and proceeded to collect the contents of the cash register with the help of the woman.

After they fled with the money, Abbas stumbled out of the store yelling for assistance. He was taken to Hammoud Hospital for treatment and released soon afterward.

Separately, a shepherd narrowly escaped catastrophe when a cluster bomb from the 2006 war with Israel exploded in the southern town of Shebaa Sunday morning, the National News Agency reported. The explosion killed and wounded several of his goats.

Elsewhere, a 5-day-old baby boy was found abandoned in a cemetery in the town of Hadath, after a municipality employee heard him crying late Friday night.

The worker called the Red Cross which took the baby in for observation. The baby is reportedly in good health, and will stay at the Red Cross until Monday if no one comes forward to claim him. After that, he will be sent to an orphanage.
